Food for Thought: Happy Mother’s Day

The month of May has a very important day in it.

May the 12th is the chosen day to honor our mothers. I have often said that being a mother has got to be the hardest job in the world. I mean, think about it. She carries this little life inside her body for nine months, then nurtures, protects and teaches her child the things needed to be a successful adult. She grieves when they make bad decisions or get hurt. She rejoices in their accomplishments and victories. She takes care of them when they are sick.

And then, she is supposed to let them go to be their own person and make their way in the world. Wow, I can’t even conceive all of that. So, before I go any further, I just want to say “Thank you!” on behalf of all the “children” in the world for all you have done and all you continue to do.

In thinking about my mother and the wonderful mother figures I am blessed to have in my life, I wanted to know what the Lord has to say about mothers in His Word. There were two specific scriptures that spoke to my heart.

A mother’s love is so powerful that God actually uses it as a metaphor for His love for us! Isaiah 66:13 says “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.” What an ultimate compliment to mothers and it is paid to you from the heart of the Supreme being of the universe. Let’s face it, He knows all you do and go through, better than anyone else.

The second scripture is Proverbs 31:25-29 which says: “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Wow, what a job description! You are an amazing woman! Have a spectacular Mother’s Day with all our love!
