Area Agency on Aging at PPACG receives grant to bring Sunshine Home Share to Colorado Springs
The PPACG Area Agency on Aging has been awarded a grant from the NextFifty Initiative to begin implementation of a home sharing program in the Colorado Springs area.
The organization will partner with the nonprofit Sunshine Home Share to provide resources and solutions for seniors on both sides of the housing market, the senior looking for a housemate and the senior looking for an affordable housing option. Combining the resources of the Area Agency on Aging and Sunshine Home Share will result in a collaborative housing option for seniors to find individualized housing solutions.
“We are thrilled that our home sharing initiative for older adults in our community has received this grant from NextFifty Initiative,” said Andrew Gunning, Executive Director of the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments. “With the foundation’s support we can now provide another option for our residents to age in place with additional supports and friendship.”
The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging (PPAAA) is the regional office for senior resources in El Paso, Park and Teller County. Ten percent of calls received by the Information and Assistance Line are requests for housing support that are currently unavailable. El Paso County is facing a shortage of 26,000 affordable housing units and a senior population over 137,000.
These seniors find themselves on fixed incomes, in need of a variety of supports to stay in their homes or find themselves priced out of the housing market. Partnering with Sunshine Home Share will provide a great first resource towards meeting affordable housing needs and supporting aging in place.
The PPAAA is one of 32 organizations chosen in this latest funding cycle to receive a grant through NextFifty Initiative’s competitive application and review process. “Our commitment to positively influencing the way individuals view and experience aging continues to inform the type of unique programs and organizations that we fund,” said Diana McFail, acting CEO of NextFifty Initiative. “We see Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging’s work in the aging space as an embodiment of our efforts to create a more positive and enlightened approach to aging. We offer our support and congratulations to the Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging.”
